National Speakers League, Inc. (“NSL,” “we,” “our,” or “us”) builds civic programs that many young people want to be part of — from the national State of the American Address® contest and its Junior Division to local clubs in schools and communities. This page explains, in plain terms, how we approach participation by minors. It works together with our Terms of Use and Privacy Policy.
1. This corporate site vs. our youth programs
This website (www.nationalspeakersleague.com) is a general-audience corporate site and is not directed to children. It does not require an account, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13 through it. Youth and student participation happens through specific NSL programs — such as the contest’s Junior Division and school or community clubs — each of which has its own program terms and privacy notice that govern that program and control where they apply.
2. Parental and guardian consent
Where a program is open to minors, a minor may take part only with the involvement and consent of a parent or legal guardianwho agrees to the applicable program terms on the minor’s behalf. By allowing a minor to participate, the parent or legal guardian consents to our collection and use of the minor’s information as described in the program’s privacy notice and, where a program involves speeches or video, to the recording, submission, and permitted program-related use of the minor’s content, name or chosen display name, and likeness.
3. Children under 13 (COPPA)
Consistent with the federal Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), where an NSL program collects personal information from a child under 13, we do so only after obtaining verifiable parental consent, and we collect only the information reasonably necessary for the child to participate. A parent or legal guardian may review the personal information we have collected from their child, request that we correct or delete it, and refuse to permit further collection or use by withdrawing consent (which may end the child’s participation).
4. How we protect minors’ information
- We collect only what a program reasonably needs, and we do not require more than that as a condition of participation.
- We do not sell minors’ personal information, use it for targeted advertising, or build advertising profiles.
- We do not knowingly collect sensitive information (such as Social Security numbers, financial, health, or biometric data), and ask that it not be submitted.
- Where a program makes content public (such as a contest submission or standings), the parent or legal guardian is responsible for what is made public and may ask us to remove a minor’s content.
5. Parental rights and requests
A parent or legal guardian may, at any time, ask to review, correct, or delete their child’s information, or withdraw consent to further collection or use. To make a request, or if you believe a child under 13 has provided us personal information without parental consent, contact us at privacy@nationalspeakersleague.com and we will respond consistent with applicable law.
6. Changes to this page
We may update this page from time to time. When we do, we will revise the “Effective Date” above and, for material changes, provide additional notice where required by law. Program-specific terms and privacy notices always control for the program they cover.
